GPS Surveying

Global Positioning Systems (GPS) have become an essential tool for the development of spatial GIS databases with applications in the natural resource, utilities, and public sector. Specifically, GPS can be used to generate detailed orthophotos and terrain models in addition to the simple geo-referencing of specific sampling or resource locations. As with most projects, careful planning prior to field data collection, such as the flying of aerial photography, can reduce project cost and greatly enhance overall data quality.

The GEO/Graphics staff has experience planning and conducting GPS surveys that have used differential post-processing or real-time kinematic GPS data collection methods. With these methods, it is possible to achieve a high level of horizontal and vertical accuracy.
